July 26th, 2010 by Grim WatersFOURTEEN FALLS etc.
Friday just been Kent and I went on a trip to a place called Fourteen Falls. As the name implies it is a place that has 14 waterfalls. For those of you intending to go you can get there quite easily by catching the no. 45 matutu to Thika from Nairobi (about 1 hr). From Thika it is another 30 min matutu ride. Warning – you get dropped off in what feels like the middle of nowhere, but is well worth the trip. Make sure you get a guide as they help you to cross the river and show you around at the same time.
A personal matatu record was achieved on this outing as our matatu managed to squeeze in 23 people – and that is with the door closed even…
While we were there the group of high school kids out on a school trip had great fun getting their picture taken with us mzungus. They thought it was hilarious, as did Kent as he knows how I hate having my picture taken - and I literally had to have it taken about 50 times.
The following day we went on another adventure. This time it was to see a place where water defies gravity. The area is called Kaloleni and is about 30 mins from Machakos, and again is in what feels like the middle of nowhere. Machakos is about 1 hour or so from Nairobi. Surprise surprise there are about 10 tour guides eager to show us the sights when we arrive. Basically when you poor water down the road it flows up the hill instead of down. It also works with a water filled bottle. Not with anything heavier than that. This place is also worth the mission as you travel through another piece of Kenya that you normally wouldn’t visit.
On Sunday arvo Kent and I went ice skating. I know, random huh, ice skating in Kenya. But it was fun. Considering I have never tried it before I thought I did ok – no tumbles, yus. Like I said in my previous post Sunday evening was lasagne night. I think our family quite enjoyed it.
Not much else to report. Things are ticking along at the hospital. I have spent a couple of afternoons at Happy Life. Next week I am changing placements to either IDP Pipeline or maybe to Happy Life.
Oh, for those of you who kindly donated funds so far I have bought some books, pencils, erasers, and sharpeners and gave to one of the volunteers to take to IDP. Tomorrow Kent and I are heading to town to get some things for the bubbas at Happy Life – nappies, toys, bottles, bibs. And for those of you who gave me baby clothes I also sent them up to IDP with another volunteer – Crystal. The babies at Happy Life have tons of clothes and apparently they are desperate for pretty much everything at IDP so I thought they would appreciate them more.
Kwaheri for now
