On the road again…

February 28th, 2009 by Karen Graaff

I’ve had 7 injections in the past 3 weeks, started taking doxicycline last night, and my room has finally stopped resembling the pre-(and during!)- packing bomb-blast….must be time to hit the road! I fly into Entebbe tomorrow, spend the night in a backpackers there, and head to Kampala on Monday morning to (finally) get a view of the place I’ll be for the next 3 months! In case anyone’s wondering, I spent my last day in Cape Town up the mountain, being blown about in gale-force winds! Aaah, nothing like home…

A couple of people have asked where I’m going and what I’m going to be doing…in all honesty, that’s a bit hard to say! I’m going to be staying in a village called Bulenga, on the outskirts of Kampala (the capital of Uganda, for those of you not up on your East African geography) -  http://www.traveljournals.net/explore/uganda/map/m2421149/bulenga.html (this is about as close as I could get to an idea of where it is). I’ll be volunteering with a group called KACCAD – http://www.volunteerkaccad.org/About_Us.html. Officially they work on income-generating projects, and provide job-skills training, as well as HIV education. BUT, in the true African spirit, I think that could turn out to be pretty flexible – whatever needs doing (including pig farming and digging wells…) This is about 17worlds away from my 3 months in New York last year!

BUT enough of this vague rambling – I need to go finish packing (of course it’s not done!) and get some sleep….in a couple of days, I’ll be able to give much more definite info on what my life is going to entail the next 3months.

Hugs to everyone :)
