Cusco

I feel like its way later in the day than it is…probably b/c I am going on 2 hours of sleep. I am staying at Srta Marina’s home and from the moment I met her, I felt at home. I’m thinking of telling her she can call me Roro, but I figure I will give it another day. She is so friendly and was so excited to see me and gave me a huge welcome hug. She immediately offered to make me tea or food or whatever I wanted. I have since found out that she is a chef so I dont think I could be more spoiled! Also, my roommates Leah and Ingrid have assured me that anything Marina gives me is safe…so I dont need to be cautious about it. That means a lot out here.
Ok…first thoughts…
The plane ride from Lima to Cusco was great. I slept about 20 mins and enjoyed the scenery the rest of the way. Nothing but blue sky, clouds and mountains….lots and lots of gorgeous mountains. I am already thinking about when I can come back in the spring so I can do some real sightseeing.
As the plane began its descent, reality started to kick in. I could see how old all of the homes were and many of them looked like they were unsafe. It was very sad to see. But like so many things in life, looks can be deceiving. When I was taken to Marina’s, I was prepared for anything and ready to ‘rough it’. And her home is so nice and comfortable and well-kept. Marina has been housing volunteers for 20 years now. There are currently 4 of us staying with her. And then her and her son live on the 3rd floor. She also has a ‘helper’ that she has hired that assists her with household duties.
Since I couldn’t sleep, the girls walked me back to Maximo Nivel so we could use the internet. It was a short walk, but the altitude is tough so I was having difficulty catching my breath a few times. But I do not have a headache so I think that the meds I took are working. Marina offered me coca tea which I’m anxious to try…I will at some point.
My appetite hasn’t kicked in yet. I’m drinking a Coke (why is all the bottled Coke here somewhat flat!!?!) and having some Ritz crackers con queso.
I need to get some sleep. Hopefully tonight. Or maybe even a nap today.
