Beach Clean-up at Turakirae Beach

March 4th, 2009 by drood

Hey ya’ll!!!!

Yesterday, we piled into the van and headed south east to Turakirae beach.  There we met up with DOC(Dept. of Conservation) staff, and were briefed on what we were doing for the day.  While we were there to pick up all kinds of trash, most of it was car parts or broken beer bottles.  WE worked for about two and a half hours.  After our beach cleaning, we headed over to the “driftwood auditorium” to listen to Professor Fraiser( a local professor from the university) talk about geomorphology.  We had a mini-lecture on the geography of the area.  Afterwards, we were rewarded with a SAUSAGE SIZZLE(the New Zealand phrase for a hot dog barbeque).  There, we not only ate hot dogs(or veggie dogs), but we also shared something from our culture……the hot dog bun!  While we ate, we talked to some of the DOC staff and learned some things about New Zealand.  Since our day ended a little early, we were able to take a stop at the beach.  We all got some nice, cold ice cream and then headed down to Days Bay.  Some of the volunteers decided to swim, while others decided to walk knee-deep into the water. It was a refreshing break, and everyone had lots of fun.  Mckenzie, Christopher, Liana and Jamie(sorry if we forgot anyone) jumped off the dock.  After about an hour and a half, we went back to the house.  We all showered and got ready for the evening event.  We went into Wellington to watch a couple of documentaries.  The documentaries were AWESOME!!!!!!!  The last one, Wild Ocean, was so amazing.  It was about the wildlife that inhabit the waters off the coast of South Africa.  We all loved it!  After, we all went home and crashed. We had an overall awesome day!! :)
