First days at work!

May 4th, 2009 by amackintosh

Monday, I started the Voluntary work here for GVN – Monday we went to Pauatahanui Wildlife Reserve, to help plant coloniseing plants to restore the natural shrub species. Helped to plant trees and explored the area slightly.

Tuesday was my first day was in the Office – I had a brainstorming session with Ray, the head of Learning and Leadning, before coming up with a few ideas for projects to work on. I’ve decided to concentrate on the waste managmnent system here in NZ , concentrating on Wellington and the surrounding area. This will expand on my Geography A level project, as I can compare it to the local recycling facilities in Pembrokeshire. I’m also hoping to appeal to school about simple ways to encourage further recycling for the school children, and researching unnesicary packaging in Supermarkets. I also want to explore how wetlands have changed in New Zeland  – how many have been destroyed, the affects on the local ecology and species, and how they are being restored and the difference that will make. I’m going to use the Wetlands we where working on as an example to draw my examles from. Lastly, we went to a talk on friday night called “350″ (http://www.350.org/dia.php) about climate change. On October 24th it’s 350 day where evryone has to do something – as I’m going to be in uni, I’n going to try and organise some ideas.
