Nepal
April 26th, 2009 by Katie GibsonHi!
I’m Katie (as most of you know) and I’m a recent University graduate from Ontario, Canada. I will soon be setting out on my Nepalese adventure with my travel partner, and best friend, Paul. Together, we will be volunteering as part of GVN’s Health Education program for 4 weeks. I was especially interested in this opportunity as a future medical doctor, and Paul has always wanted to see the Himilayas, so this program/trip will be a perfect fit for us! Upon completion of our volunteer time, we intend to spend a couple more weeks touring around, enjoying the beauty and vibrance of Nepal and neighboring countries, India and China.
Our trip begins in only 2 short days! This past weekend I was able to visit with family and friends, say my goodbyes, and receive important words of wisdom? from my loved ones! Tomorrow will consist of last minute errands, packing (followed by unpacking and then re-packing again), charging my iPod and camera, and a nice – LONG – bath! Tuesday is Travel Day #1 with our flight leaving in the early evening from Toronto.
I still don’t think this entire thing has sunk in quite yet (and it probably won’t until I’m half way there on the plane – at which point it will be much too late to turn back). However, I am trying to stay positive as I know this will be the most incredible experience I will ever have. I understand that this trip will be challenging (as most of you know, I am not used to living out of a backpack) but I am embracing it and am sure I will learn many things. I honestly beleive I will return a better person and will want to expand my travel experiences much more.
There are so many things I am grateful for and I want to name as many of them as I can before I go. Mom, Dad, and Timmers – thank you for supporting me and providing me with the opportunity to do this…I will miss you and will be home before you can get turned around twice! Mama – you’re a tough ol’ bird and have taught me to be independent and tough myself…thank you. Uncle Jamie – you were so adventurous and handy…with your help and guidance, I will try to be the same while I’m away! To ALL my bestests – you make me laugh, and cry, and laugh, and stay focused, and let loose, and laugh! I can be myself around you all…so, thank you.
Enough of the mushiness! Stay tuned for weekly (if not daily) posts about what we’re up to, who we’ve met, where we are, and any other shananigans we get ourselves into! I imagine the next post to be in a few days (by Friday hopefully), once we’ve arrived and are settled.
Love you! Take care! DON’T WORRY too much!!
