one week down…..
October 11th, 2009 by Elizabeth LewerHi everyone,
Yes I am back in civilisation and to be honest I really was liking the country side….Kathmandu is loud and smelly ALL THE TIME.
So on Wednesday we packed up and high tailed it out of the city out to the village of Bistachhap. That took about 1.5 hours. On the way we stopped at the GVN build site. They are building a new home as some of the kids are currently in a rented place and it is way too small. They are doing such an amazing job.
Then we went on the Bistachhap to meet our host families. My family was just a mum, dad & 2 daughters but most Nepali families are quite large with the sons wife moving in with his family. So you can get 2 or 3 generations in one house. The village itself is lovely with rice paddies to the east & bush covered trees to the west. We went for a couple of bigs hikes. One to one of the high points in the hills where we could see the whole kathmandu valley and then another one to see the Golden Buddha who is about 30 metres tall (and up a massive flight of stairs!)
We visited the other home and they are all so awesome. The work they are doing out here is so amazing. I am being placed in Godwari which is about a 40 minute walk south of Bistachhap so I will be able to meet up with other volunteers and take the kids to visit each other. April (my crazy Canadian friend) is also being placed in Godwari with me but she is health team so might not be around all the time. But I am loving it. I cant wait to get in and start working with the kids. I have to tell you about the meals. We have Dhall Bahat twice a day at 0930 ish and 1930ish. This is boiled rice(bhaat), dhall, Sagg (boiled spinach) Tekkari(curried vegetables) and achara (salty/spicy pickles) I really like it. Even when I am stting there with my nose dripping from the spiciness! But we have tea in the morning and Kharja in the early afternoon which is tea with a snack like biscuits or popcorn. But I am craving some fruit as it is really expensive on the villages and not that great qualityand something that isnt DhallBhatt would be nice occasionally! So I go to my placement tomorrow and there is internet in Godwari so I will send you an update and soem pictures (hopefully) towards the end of this week when I have soem actual news to tell =)
See you all later
