Week Trois
October 29th, 2009 by Tom LehmannThe past weekend (extended – thursday to tuesday) was spend with a total of 34 hours on a bus/van to travel to Mole National Park in Northern Ghana. Every morning we had to wake by four to catch some type of public transportation, but the traveling was well worth it. The park was filled with antelope that gallop at blurring speeds and giant waterbuck that make the antelope look like little babies. The term “african sunset” was fulfilled up north, with a flat streak of fire orange burning away the day. We spent two nights there, one at the touristy hotel and one at the pleasant group of mud huts at the Salia Brothers place. The northern region is 100% muslim, which adds an interesting air to the people; they are infinitely nice, but noticeably hostile when provoked.
Other than that, life is relaxed in the village. The one working computer that me and the committee had access to has busted, so now I am at a loss of how to teach them efficiently how to help themselves with regard to raising money. Maybe community business ideas? I pounded casava in a giant mortar and pescle for the first time, which I must admit was a hell of a workout. Oh, and one tro-tro was infested with fleas, thus my entire lower leg is covered in bites. Awesome. We are all excited for two upcomming festivals: this weekend the Yam, and next the Sasadu, where the president of Ghana will be speaking.
