The Project III – Last Update
April 25th, 2009 by Elias PariscaThis last week in Ghana was really productive. I met with two high-level public officials, Minister of Tourism/Member of Parliament Juliana Azuma and the newly-elected District Chief Executive Mr. Adzaho. I first met with MP Azuma at her home. Very nice house, but not luxurious, exactly what you should expect from a respected politician. She was very warm and welcoming, as well as receptive to what I had to say. I basically tried to get a feel for what she could possibly do to provide the electricity poles to Adaklu Have. She mentioned that as Adzaho had been recently elected, it was his responsibility to dispatch the poles. However, she did assure me that, once the paperwork gets to her desk from Adzaho, she will definitely give our application the stamp of approval. That was very productive because now my job was to meet with Adzaho – the one man responsible for providing the electricity poles – and hold him accountable; having the MP on my side will help as leverage in case the Adzaho drags his feet and fails to provide the poles.
So I met with Adzaho a few days later. To keep it short, he assured me that he will take office by the end of April, and the poles would be dispatched to Adaklu Have within one month! Now, I’m not so optimistic that this will happen so soon, but it seems that in the next few months the poles may finally be sent to our village free of charge. That is really great news considering that the poles are really the only acquisition necessary to establish electricity in Adaklu Have. After the poles are received, the community will be responsible for erecting them and the electricity company is set to install the wires and connect the village to the national grid. I’m hopeful that my efforts will produce results within the next few months. I will remain in contact with Simon and Courage to make sure that they follow-up with Adzaho and hold him accountable. If all goes as planned, Adaklu Have will have electricity in the next 4-6 months!
