An Introduction

It is exactly one week before I leave on my grand adventure to Ecuador.  By this time, 7 days from now, I’ll be flying somewhere over Central or South America.  I am excited, but there is still so much to accomplish.  I have yet to pack, although I have all my gear together.  I also have this big project at work that must be finished before I leave.  It is behind schedule and I have several appointments this week.  But whatever happens, I’m getting on the plane next Sunday and heading away from EVERYTHING I have known for the past 28 years.  My trip will last 4 weeks and 5 days and will take me to Quito, Tena, and the remote reaches of Amazonian Ecuador at the Jatun Sacha Biological Reserve.  I will be doing conservation work, but to say much more than that would be purely hypothetical. 

Kelly has been phenominal in supporting me on this trip.  I wouldn’t be going without her support and she has really encouraged me to take this journey that has always been my dream.  She will not be going with me, as she has to take care of the trees on the home front.  We’re both doing conservation work in our own ways. 

As you can already tell, I have decided to keep in touch with everyone via this blog. It will include some video blogs as time allows, and I will try to include plenty of pictures. As I’m not an experienced blogger, I’m still exploring some of the capabilities and limitations of this blog and may do some experimenting in the future. I’m not going to promise any regularity or set schedule for updates. I have no idea how much time I’ll have when I get there and I certainly don’t know how functional technology will be in the middle of the rainforest. But I do hope that you will “check up” on me every now and then and take some small part in the adventures that are about to unfold. Not being the egocentric type that wants the world to know about every detail of my life, I’ll try to make the blogs somewhat interesting for a general audience and include a lot of lessons learned and good experiences (and maybe some bad, as well). So stay tuned…
