Medasse

September 16th, 2008 by Daphne Murphy

I realize that my last Title for my post, An obroni, a proposal, and thanks, didn’t make much sense. I forgot to add that I had my first marriage proposal. I was waiting for Auntie Cecilia at the market talking to some locals and one asked if I would be his new friend. I said yes of course and then he began talking about a wedding. I thought he was saying that he works weddings but he was actually asking for my hand in marriage, I told him that were moving to fast and had a good laugh. The thanks [...]

Brushing my teeth

September 13th, 2008 by Kerry Flynn

I have been staying in a hostel about a five minute walk from the school.  It is very nice.  I have a spacious bedroom, for now, since it is for two people.  I am sure it will be cramped when my roommate arrives in October.  I have electricity and a FAN, which I love.  The house has a western toilet which you rinse with a bucket of water after using and a tempermental shower.  That means that I am using a bucket and wash cloth, but i am grateful for a private place to bathe within the house.  The man [...]

An obroni, a proposal, and thanks

September 12th, 2008 by Daphne Murphy

I am an obroni, a white person. People laugh and love yelling it as a hello from across the street, I also enjoy it and the relaxing atmosphere of such a difficult subject, race. I appreciate being in a culture where everyone has a divine honesty about them. It has only been 4 days, yet already I have learned so much and had so many amazing conversations about politics, schools, race, and our world that we live in. I have so longed for this opportunity to ask the questions that my culture has shuned as being politically incorrect. Yes, it [...]

Welcome to Ghana

September 10th, 2008 by Kerry Flynn

I just wanted to let everyone know that I made it safe and kind of sound to my village of Kitase.  Mom, Dad, and Mike were witness to my fragile emotional state before leaving the Eppley airport, and I really worried about nothing.  I had no problem navigating my way through the airport in Accra and was even able to meet up with another volunteer. The people are so friendly, I have received countless greetings of “Welcome to Ghana,” most often followed by “You’ll love it here.” I hope so!
I stayed the first night in a hotel in Accra, and as Eric [...]

First day in Tema with my new best friend Ernest

September 9th, 2008 by Daphne Murphy

Today is my first day in Tema, Ghana. I arrived with a warm welcome from the students. So far I have set up my room and talked with the teachers and the students. I had soup and chicken for lunch with some yam. It was very tasty. After meeting the teachers I learned that I will be teaching KG 1 and 2 with Auntie Funnie and Auntie Georgina. The children are amazing. We played soccer in the yard, I sadly lost. And then they taught me many hand games. I tried to teach them headstands but they need [...]

Day two

September 9th, 2008 by Daphne Murphy

Another day in beautiful Africa. I realized that my last one was not filled with much information so I’ll try once more. Tema is the third largest city of Ghana. It is less chaotic than Accra (the capital), which has shops on every street and everyone is trying to sell you something, from food and candy to belts and bibles. The community I am living in is off the main road. They are all numbered, mine is number 12. There are a couple apartments and then my school. I live in the Head Masters house and I will be sharing [...]

this is me, Pre-Ghana

September 5th, 2008 by Bethany

Hello, all!  This is me testing out my new communication toy/tool.  I am about to depart into the world from my safety-net-home, but I have to have dinner, first.  Really, I leave in a day and a half, on Sunday at 1:30 pm.
I really can’t decide how I’m feeling about this whole shindig, yet.  Mostly I’m just wondering which emotion is most appropriate.  Fear, excitement, enthusiasm, awe, homesickness, joy…  They’re all so jumbled up right now that I really can’t decide.  Oh well, too much self-examination usually results in the same as no self-examination.
I am reacting to my messy emotional state [...]

one week and counting

September 1st, 2008 by Kerry Flynn

As of today, I have less than a week before I leave for Ghana.  I have been preparing all summer yet I know that I will be so unprepared when I arrive.  I am looking forward to giving back, learning about a new culture, and experiencing a very different way of life.  I am grateful to everyone who has been supportive of my upcoming adventure, especially mom and Mike.  All I know so far is that I will teaching at the Wisdom Academy in Kitase, Ghana.  The rest I am soon to discover.
