Ethiopia Volunteer Journals
The Global Volunteer Network currently has opportunities to work with children and their community through our partner organization in Ethiopia. Volunteers will assist our partner organisation's mission to rescue children off the streets and give them a better life.
Volunteers will be involved in tutoring children after school with a focus on conversational English, grammar, science, and mathematics. Additionally, volunteers with musical and computer skills are needed to instruct the children in these areas.

I’m on the count down for my volunteering in Ghana. I will leave the USA on October 28th arriving on October 29th and I’ll be volunteering until December 31, 2010. I will not leave Ghana until January 10, 2011. I’ll be spending time with a dear friend who will visit with me at that time and hopefully we will do some traveling.
I’ve never been to Ghana so this will be a new adventure. Each time I’ve volunteered (Vietnam, Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia) it’s been a completely different adventure. I will work the “Peace Cell” project as well as whatever else is [...]

I have returned from a month at MMHCH, and hate to leave the 18 wonderful children, and the friendly staff. The real world beckons, and had to return to USA, to snow, cold, and work. I did miss my wife and grandkids, so was happy to be home. For advice to those entering the Ethiopia program, the children need clothes, and the MMHCH needs money. You’ll not need alot of clothes, t-shirts for day, light jacket or sweatshirt for evenings. I enjoyed my stay, as Addis Ababa was always fun to discover new places to sip coffee with friends, after [...]

I’m doing my last minute preparations now and my wife and I will drive to the airport in several hours. Heading for an interesting journey and I’m really looking forward to it.
Here’s a picture of two of my Ethiopian friends and myself.

Tomorrow I leave Ethiopia soil and hopefully will land in D.C. Dulles airport on Monday at 7:35 a.m.
For the moment I’m in a expensive hotel. I opted to stay somewhere really nice for my last day/night here. It’s the Atlas International. The bathroom has a real shower with lots of water and it’s hot (yeah!)
I’ve been sick for a while with a cruppy hacking cough that hurts my right side when I cough. I strained something there.
I said my goodbyes to the children before hopping in the taxi. I got lots of [...]

This past weekend four of us (three volunteers and Bobby – a wonderful Ethiopian man who is a friend) headed to Lake Lagano. Bobby rented a car from a friend for the weekend. We gassed up on Saturday morning after waking up at the Pension Life Hotel where we stayed the night because we went to the Holland House for dinner and afterwards to hang at the bar. That’s where you see all the “for-en-gie” which means white to the Ethiopians. Since it would be impossible to get back to the house for curfew (the gate [...]

I am almost mid-way through my 1-month Ethiopia programme with the Mercy Children’s Home here in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Thus far, it has been a most amazing experience. I’m not sure where to start but I’ll try talking about the volunteers I’ve met. We are like an advertisement for the United Colours of Benetton – diverse in background, age and race. Sami is a 68-year old woman from the US, Femke is a 25-year old girl and hails from Holland while I am a 31-year old Chinese male from Singapore. I’ve enjoyed every moment interacting with them and even as [...]

I’m now sitting at an internet cafe (Right Click) in Addis. We (three volunteers) have been in Addis for the weekend. We had a difficult time getting a taxi out of Asko (where we volunteer) but finally got one that would drive us into the City at 8 p.m. in the evening. There are not a lot of taxi’s in Asko.
We arrived at our hotel called Life Pension (#2) and met up with a past volunteer (Erin who is still vacationing in Ethiopia until the 10th) and two Ethiopians (both named Bobby). The two Bobby’s, Cle [...]

A good weekend
My weekend was spent in the big City of Addis where we once again rented a room (this time one between Femke and myself at 250 birr per night (12 birr to a US dollar). We stayed only Saturday night where Erin and Kevin stayed both Friday and Saturday nights.
Saturday we rode with Dr. Famhi (an Ethiopian Doctor that is currently unemployed) to his sister’s house in the suburbs. It was nice to get out of the City and to see some of the suburbs (even thought we live in a suburb called Asco (sometimes spelled [...]

The program is going very well. I enjoy the teaching of the children and they are learning more quickly then the last batch of children. Hopefully that tells a little about the volunteers that have been with these kids so far. Brian left last week but Kevin, Erin, Femke (new volunteer) and myself (Sami) are still here. The kids seem to like the way we teach with is often with games. We play store with them so they know numbers, how to ask for things and responses. I’m concerned about Daniale who is some [...]

I don’t know when I’ll get this email/journal sent but I’m hoping to do it this weekend when I go to the City of Addis Ababa and stay at a hotel over Friday night.
So, here’s a little about my travels so far. My flight went without incident – meaning it was normal but it was long. 16 hours in the same plane (one stop over in Rome but only for fueling, food and beverage and a change in airline personal).
I was met at the airport and we took a taxi to Asko where I’m [...]

Wow, where did the time go. I had so much time before but now I’m only ten days away from flying out of here. While I do have all the major things done and am even packed I still have all my business things to take care of to insure my home runs smoothly. I thank my daughter Aletha for helping as well as Jack and my friends Leslie and Soren for their help too. Hopefully, I’ll have my t’s crossed and my i’s dotted and things will go smoothly.
It’s starting to get cold here in [...]

Time is flying quickly now and soon I’ll be flying quickly too. I can’t wait to taste the Ethiopian food. I do go here in Philly but it’s a long time in between meals. I received my Visa on Saturday so that means I have everything that is required. I’ve used the check list that GVN supplies and it’s got a lot of checks on it. My only thing left is to pack and that’s nearly done. All is packed except my clothes and toothbrush. I was hoping to hear from the volunteer [...]

Wow – one month from today I will be on Ethiopia soil. I’m really anxious to get there. I was sent names of two volunteers – one of which has just arrived in Ethiopia – I had a pang of jealousy but realize my time will come and it will come soon cause one month isn’t anything when it comes to being prepared to leave for my next adventure.
I want to thank my family and my friends who have contributed to this worthy cause. Without them I would not be able to afford the cost. So, [...]

Change of plans because of home obligations – so now I’ll be volunteering for November and December, 2009. I’ve made my flight plans on Ethiopia Airlines leaving October 28, 2009 and returning January 5, 2010. While that seems so far away, it isn’t. There are still many things to do. I’ve paid for my room/board for the two months and also paid for Chubb Insurance for the time I’ll be away. I still must see what shots need to be up-dated, purchase malaria pills (the weekly ones) and to send in my police report when it’s returned to [...]

Not much time between now and when I leave for Ethiopia. Money is tough to come by this year but I’ll make it. I’ve paid for my room/board for two of the months and now saving for the air fare, insurance and VISA. Still must do my police report but it will all be done in due time. I’m wondering if anyone out there (who reads this of course) has volunteered in Ethiopia and would make contact with me at dreamkeeper1_2000@yahoo.com. I’d be interested in picking your brain for information to make me a better volunteer since you have already [...]
