China Volunteer Journals

This program is located in Shandong Province and volunteers can teach conversational english at a primary, secondary and university level. Education is regarded extremely important in China, so children are sent from the local villages into the cities to be schooled. The schools are well resourced and volunteers are sought in order to help with conversational English. It is the wish of the Chinese nation to become bilingual.

The hours worked vary from school to school, but generally volunteers usually teach between 14 hours and 20 hours per week. The teaching timetable is discussed personally with the school principal, and can be tailored to the preference of each volunteer. There may be some evening and weekend classes in the program. During the weekends the schools usually organize outings. The type of teaching volunteers are expected to do will consist of helping the students practise comprehension and pronunciation.

Only 2 weeks to go

February 18th, 2010 by Gene

This is a test to see how this journal works. I am busily packing and getting last minute paperwork done. My last overseas volunteer trip was pretty easy to pack for, this one involves clothes for winter through summer in 2 bags. I have lots of material on my laptop–I hope I can get it out once I get to Yantai.

Getting Busier

I’ve recently met other international students and teachers at the uni next door. Their dorm is a 15 min walk for me and I’ve met some really awesome people from all over the world, and its nice to have people to sightsee and just hang out with. Two of my friends I have met are going to work on going to Shanghai and Huangshan over our week holiday for the mid autumn festival in October. Im already VERY excited. Huangshan will be quite a hike but the views are supposed to spectacular. As my friend Kim pointed out, it looks like the scenery in Kung [...]

I have been in Yantai for about 2 days now. I am getting settled in, but I dont start teaching until next monday. I still need to find out more details about my teaching position. There are things to do within a 15 min. walk which is nice. Or i can talk a bus downtown. Its been rather lonely so far because I am the only volunteer at my school. I forgot how everyone stares here because I am foreign. Something I just have to get used to. haha. I am excited to start teaching so I have something to do [...]

In just 12 hours I am leaving for my 3 month trip to China. I hope to keep in touch with family and friends while in China through this journal, and give others who are considering volunteering on the same program an idea of what it is like. Unfortunately I wont actually have access to my journal while in China because it is hosted by WordPress, which is currently blocked in China along with Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, etc. I plan on emailing my mom entires for her to post. Feel free to email me or add me on skype…I should have access to both [...]
